Digital Voice Recorder

The Digital Voice Recorder or DVR is a multichannel solid-state digital audio recorder that remotely records and plays back audio through the repeater. It allows users to remotely record real voice mailbox messages and allows the repeater trustee to program various system message with real speech.

The DVR provides 100 user mailboxes for users to pass real voice messages to each other. These mailboxes are completely separate from the repeater mailboxes. However, if you are a user of the IREAN system and have a mailbox/autodial location assigned in the repeater, then you also have the same mailbox in the Digital Voice Recorder.

The DVR also provides users with a quick way of recording their signal into the repeater system. A user can enter a simple command, record a brief test message and listen to their own signal into the repeater.

Recording a test message in the Digital Voice Recorder

To record a brief test message, key your PTT, enter the comand 46 * * * and release your PTT. Wait for the normal courtesy tone, key up again and say some kind of brief message. When you unkey your PTT for the second time, you will hear your own voice played back through the repeater. This gives users a better indication of how well their signal is into the repeater system than using the S-Meter request.

Recording in the Public Mailbox

The DVR provides up to 9 public mailboxes. This is where anyone can record a message to anyone else. To leave a message in the Public Mailbox, enter the command 46 * and unkey. Its important to note that you must unkey your PTT when executing any DVR command. This is because the DVR will prompt you with real voice messages to guide you through the recording process.

When you unkey, the repeater will ask, "Who is the Message for?"

Key your PTT once again and say the persons name or callsign and unkey.

The repeater will then prompt you to "Record your message now."

Key your PTT once again and begin recording you message. Please note that messages are limited to 10 secs each. Total recording time for the DVR is 2 min 30 sec. This total time is also used for any prompting messages and various repeater message used by the system in its daily routine.

When you are finished recording your message, unkey your PTT. The repeater will respond, "Your message has been stored."

Checking the DVR for Public Mail Messages

Public mail in the DVR can be checked any time by entering the command 46. The repeater will respond with either a list of names/callsigns stored in the DVR or "I'm sorry, there are no messages at this time" if the Public Mailbox is empty.

Also, during an initial ID of the repeater, the repeater will send any names/callsigns of messages waiting in the DVR. If the Public Mailbox is empty, the repeater will just send an initial ID.

Reading a Public Mail Message

To read a public message, enter the command 46 x where x is the number (1-9) of the message in the message list to be played.

Erasing a Public Mail Message

After listening to a public mail message, enter the command 46 * * to erase it. The repeater will respond, "You're message has been erased." To delete a message, it must first be played with the 46 x command. Each message played must be erased on an individual basis. Group erasures of messages are not allowed at the user level.

Recording a Private Mail Message

To record a Private Mailbox Message into one of the available 100 slots, enter the command 46 * xx where xx is the mailbox slot to record to. Unkey your PTT and the repeater will prompt you to "Record your message now."

Checking and Reading the Private Mailbox

To check and read a Private Mailbox, enter the command 46 xx where xx is the mailbox location to check. If there is mail in the Private Mailbox, all mail will be played back at one time. There is no way to play just one message at a time. If there was no mail, the repeater would respond, "I'm sorry, there is no mail at this time."

The only way to check a private mailbox message is to use the 46 xx command. The repeater does not keep track of private mail in the Digital Voice Recorder.

To help others know they have a Private Mailbox Message, canned message number 9 from repeater mailboxes, can be used to provide a way of notifying a user there is mail in their private mailbox.

Erasing the Private Mailbox

After listening to mail using the 46 xx command, enter the command 46 * *. The repeater will respond, "Your message has been erased." All message played from the Private Mailbox will be erased at one time.
